7 Summer Thoughts of New College Residents

By Jessica Mahmoud on July 18, 2015

Dorming in college is totally new for many students, especially freshman.

Even as a junior though, I can show that upperclassmen can be new to dorm life as well. Here’s some things new residents are probably thinking about as summer is about halfway over and move in day will be here before you know it.

1. The beds are twin extra long!? So I need to buy new sheets?

Many students going or in college come from a home where they probably don’t sleep in a twin bed. Those were probably gone years ago. Twin extra long beds are even less common to have at home, which means you probably have to buy new sheets. While they are not impossible to find, it is a whole other decision to make.

2. How should I decorate my room? What’s my theme and color?

One of the fun things about dorm life is the idea of being able to start totally fresh with your room decor. You’re literally given a blank canvas for your bed, desk, walls, closet, etc. This can be kind of overwhelming though, so be sure to plan accordingly.

3. So wait, this means I have to do my own laundry. How does that work?

Living at home, your parents might have done your laundry for you. Now that they won’t be around, you’ll have to do this on your own. I mean unless you plan on bringing it home for them to do, which I don’t suggest. It’s really not that hard, I promise.

4. But the freshman 15 …

Another thing about dorm life is making your own decisions on eating and when you have your meals. College is known to kind of make you gain some weight due to not always having the healthiest choices, late night study snacks, and those unlimited swipes in the all-you-can-eat dining hall. You don’t have to gain weight though! Just make good choices and stay fit while still enjoying yourself. And if you gain a little weight, it’s not the end of the world.

5. So about my roommate …

At this point in the summer you may not even have a roommate, but hopefully you do. You may have been keeping in touch with them, or maybe you’re just still stalking them on social media. There’s a lot of anticipation with who your roommate is, or who they really are, in the sense of how it’s going to be living with them. Time will tell!

6. Who’s buying what?

Speaking of your roommate, there are a few things you’ll probably want to share that you only need one of. These common items include a mini fridge, television, microwave, and shower curtain. Try seeing what you already might have, or know you can find cheap and let them know. This gives you dibs to what you contribute, since you kept on top of it before move-in day.

7. So, when’s move-in day?

As the summer continues, if you’re starting to miss college or get super excited, you might just really be wondering when move-in day actually is. Maybe you already have a countdown. I know how you feel. It’ll come soon enough.

Moving out and living on your own away from your family can be very exciting. It also comes with some preparation that you might want to start taking care of while you have the free time of these long summer days. Good luck!
