It is important to have everything situated in your apartment before classes start. This way you can solely focus on organizing your schoolwork and schedule, not the leftover clothes you still have not put away.

Between the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living room, there is a lot that needs tending to. Let’s start with the number one priority.

The Bedroom

The one thing in there that certainly has to be prepared is your bed. I mean, where are you going to sleep? The floor? A good night’s rest is the best way to start your first day of classes, and so on. When you move in, make sure your mattress is present, along with pillows and bedding.

Next, your wardrobe should be fully unpacked. There is nothing more hectic than looking for a certain pair of jeans when you were supposed to be at the bus stop five minutes ago. Do you see a pattern? Preparing your bedroom before classes start is designed to lessen any potential first-week stress.

Make sure all the outlets in your room are properly, and reliably, working. After all, don’t we all use our phone or alarm clock to wake us up at a decent hour? What good do they do if the outlet cannot power them up? That, ladies and gentlemen, is called missing your first class.

I would consider your bed, wardrobe, and electricity the three top things to worry about when first moving into your apartment. The rest can be set up as the week goes on. That includes any desk arrangements, décor, lighting, etc.

Secondhand to preparing your bedroom is organizing your bathroom.

The Bathroom

I would consider the toilet the top priority when preparing your bathroom. But what does it mean to “prepare” the toilet? By that, I simply mean see if it works. Give it a few flushes and watch how the water rises and whatnot. Safe to realize it doesn’t properly work now than later. On the plus side, hopefully there is at least another toilet in your apartment, therefore if yours isn’t working then you don’t have to full-on panic.

The next step is to prepare your shower. This amounts to filling it with all your products and giving it a good wipe down before using it. For example, it isn’t too fun hopping out of the middle of your shower to go fetch shampoo. Make sure it is filled with everything you need.

In addition, like testing the toilet, you should test your shower. Check that the water reaches both cold and hot temperatures without a problem. The more you do before the first week of school starts, the less you have to worry about.

It never hurts to have a toothbrush sitting around before your first day of classes either. Although it really isn’t considered a “top” priority, your classmates will appreciate it.

Other toiletries such as Q-tips, cotton balls, tissues, etc. can be organized as the week goes on. They do not show much importance prior to starting classes.

Moreover, what is an apartment without a kitchen?

The Kitchen

I consider this third to your bedroom and bathroom because you can always eat on campus. However, if you are set on not spending your meal plan as sporadically as you did the year before, there are a few things in the kitchen that should be prepared before the others.

First and foremost, go buy food. What is a kitchen without food? You can eat ice, but it won’t be that fulfilling. If you are on a tight budget for the beginning of the semester, just get the essentials and stray away from candy, soda, chips, etc.

Secondly, you will need to have silverware to eat with. Definitely set up your silverware drawer prior to classes starting. Searching for a spoon to eat your cereal with is equivalent to searching for that pair of jeans. Unneeded stress.

Furthermore, plates and cups would also be of help to you. If you want to eat like a savage your first week of school, by all means do it. However, I bet most of you would like to eat off a clean surface and not have to drink out of the milk gallon.

Therefore, when preparing your kitchen, prioritize the food supply, silverware drawer, and the presence of cups/plates. Other items like pans, spatulas, blenders, etc. can be unpacked as the week goes on.

The least important room to prepare before school starts is the living room.

The Living Room

Your everyday living room consists of a couch, a TV, and a few side tables. So why waste your few precious days of unpacking on it? If you are so desperate to lay down, you have a bed. Want to watch TV? You have a laptop.

Organize this room after your bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen are taken care of.

There is a lot of unpacking involved when moving into a new apartment, but the key is to space it out so you don’t get overwhelmed. Follow these prioritized tips to assure a stress-free first week of class — for the most part!
