A kitchen is only as useful as that which you stock it with, though, especially as a college student, you also want to ensure you are following the rule of “less is more.” So how exactly do you keep a minimalist kitchen while simultaneously ensuring you have everything that you’re going to need?

The below six tips for a minimalist kitchen are a great starting point to ensure you have everything that you need, but that you also don’t go overboard!

1. Keep Dishware to a Minimum

It’s so easy to get carried away when it comes to stocking your kitchen. Utensils, dishware, and appliances are all super easy to add to your shopping cart, but not all of them are actually necessary for your everyday use.

Generally speaking, you should only be holding onto dishware and other kitchen items if you plan to use them frequently. The general rule is to think back to the last time you used an item, and if it wasn’t used in the past 6 months, you should toss it (or put it into storage for when you have more room to keep it in your kitchen).

2. Keep Things Organized

Organization is huge when it comes to your kitchen, as clutter is always going to lead to more clutter. If you don’t keep your counters clear instead of a catchall for your items, you’ll quickly find that the rest of the kitchen will follow suit.

It comes down to this: keep your space organized, and don’t put anything in the kitchen that doesn’t belong in the kitchen. While it seems like a common-sense rule, it’s also one that’s all too easy to break, so the more religiously you follow it, the more likely you are to keep a minimalist kitchen.

3. Keep Your Counter Space

Counter space is essential to keeping a clean, minimalist kitchen. Many college students will use counter space to store their larger appliances or to take up space for wine racks or other kitchen items that aren’t necessary.

If you find yourself falling for these common errors, your kitchen looks cluttered, and that clutter will only grow as time goes on. To avoid this issue, keep your counter spaces clear and make sure everything is being properly stored, off the counter.

4. Keep Your Fridge in Check

Have you ever had a science experiment in your fridge? You wouldn’t be the first. If you want to have a minimalist kitchen, you should make sure that your fridge is always clean and clear of any and all science experiments.

For this reason, you should be going through your fridge weekly (monthly, if that’s more realistic) simply to ensure everything in your fridge is healthy and useable. Basically, you should only ever be storing food that’s actually edible in your fridge, otherwise, you’re just taking up space for no reason.

5. Keep Things Single

More often than not, people will gift you kitchen items that you already have. Rather than politely storing duplicates in your kitchen, make sure you are only keeping one of each item.

If necessary, you can put duplicate items into storage, donate them or gift them to a friend or family member. The bottom line is that you should never have duplicates of the same kitchen item, as all this does is take up space for no reason, whatsoever. Remember, less is always more when it comes to the kitchen.

6. Keep Everything In Its Place

Last, but certainly not least, you need to ensure everything is always in its place, no matter what. Think about anytime you have cleaned an area of your house or apartment; more often than not, things are clean for a while, up until you lose interest or begin letting clutter pile up. At this point, the mess comes back, and you’re stuck once again with a mess.

For this reason, you should always keep your kitchen items in their place. While it’s easy to resort back to cluttered counters, try to avoid this at all costs, otherwise, you’ll constantly find yourself battling a mess in your kitchen, time and time again.

Again, having a minimalist kitchen as a college student is in your best interest. When it comes down to it, you should have a kitchen that’s stocked with everything that you need, but with nothing more.

It’s easy to get carried away with kitchen supplies, so don’t fall victim to these same problems. Make sure you stock your kitchen with everything you need, but only within reason. As a general rule of thumb, if you haven’t used something in over 6 months, you don’t need it to take up space in your kitchen.

The more you are able to get rid of (without tossing the necessities) the more likely you are to have a successful, minimalist kitchen.

Enjoy the spring cleaning!
