I'm having a great time studying abroad! What are the best ways to remember my time abroad? Is it worth it to buy a fancy camera? Buy souvenirs?

To capture the fun moments you're experiencing abroad, there are a few things I would recommend! First, if you have a smartphone, take pictures on there! The technology that we have today has made it possible to take remarkable pics on our phones- plus you can add filters with apps like VSCO to make the moments look even cooler. Second, a polaroid camera is an awesome and inexpensive way to add a nostalgic and vintage flair to your memories, plus they make awesome decorations! Souvenirs are also great ways to remember your trip and if I were you, I would pick up brochures, flyers, business cards, etc. of places you've eaten, stayed at, visited, etc. to remember those places more vividly too! You can combine all of these items in a scrapbook to look back on someday!
I took a TON of photos when I was abroad and I'm so happy I did now that I'm home. Its a great way to show your friends and family what you did while abroad, as well as a fun way for you to reflect back on it. I didn't buy any souvenirs really, I just kept things like tickets from events and fun things I did.
Start a blog or a journal. This will allow you to look back on your time abroad and relive those memories and review the thoughts you had while living abroad. It can also remind you of memories you may forget down the road. Pictures are also a great way to remember your time abroad, but I think written word is more powerful.
Many of my friends started collections during their times abroad from every country and place that they visited. Many of them did postcards because it's cheap and does not take up too much space, but you could also collect coins/currency, small trinkets, key chains, shot glasses, etc. You could also take pictures and create a scrapbook!
I know that students who study abroad are often already strapped for cash, so if you don't want to buy anything to remember your time abroad, simply commit to writing a summary of each day/week of your trip in a journal! Alternatively, there are some great smartphone apps like DayOne that help you document each of your days through phone photos and descriptions or other text entries. Do not underestimate the power of words as tools to help you remember your experiences! Once you return home, you might embark on a more structured or culminating project with the writing you did abroad. You might even list the 5 positive and 5 negative things that happened each day abroad, or come up with other creative prompts to help you write about your time abroad if you aren't excited by the prospect of just sitting down and writing what you did each day. There are probably cool prompts online for students to write from that are related to travelling abroad!
A go-pro is an excellent option! They are nigh indestructible, water proof, and take really clear, crisp photos. They are not as pricey as some other high end cameras so I think that they are definitely worth the investment. It is hard to lug around souvenirs-- invest in memories instead of objects.
That's great! Besides the memories you have, obviously taking pics is a great way to remember your time abroad and be able to share your experiences with your family and friends. Unless you're into photography, it's probably not worth it to spend the money on a fancy camera -- you can just use your phone or invest in a more inexpensive point-and-shoot digital camera that will be easier for you to travel with and carry. Of course, buying souvenirs is also a fun way for you to come back with a memento -- just choose things that are on the smaller side so they're easier to pack and go for more useful items rather than just stuff that will lay around. Things like magnets, keychains, mugs, bags, scarves, etc. are things you'll use or enjoy seeing in your apartment or house when you get back, plus are relatively inexpensive and easy to bring home.
